During the last year of my Master Degree in Automation Engineering at the Politecnico di Milano, I wrote a thesis on the simulation of fluids. In my thesis, I show how the Navier-Stokes equations can be approximated with the Lagrangian method named Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) in order to simulate with accuracy, stability and good speed the dynamics of free flow fluids. The SPH algorithm is also implemented using NVidia CUDA in order to achieve real-time performance in the simulation for up to 300000 particles. The resulting simulation is also rendered in real-time using ad-hoc CUDA-OpenGL routines.
